Money Management
No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other,
or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.
You cannot serve God and money.
– Matthew 6:24
“Despite the importance of money and money management, very few high schools or colleges require a money management course. The impact of poor money management can range from overspending and missed credit card payments, to partner and family conflict, to gambling disorder and hoarding, to bankruptcy and legal problems. These issues can be influenced by one’s attitudes towards and relationship with money.”

God Owns it All
The silver is mine and the gold is mine, declares the Lord Almighty.
– Haggai 2:8
The key to understanding God’s will in finances is the proper understanding of stewardship. By Webster’s definition of stewardship, a steward is “one who manages another’s property.”
We are merely stewards of God’s property while we are on earth. He can choose to entrust us with as much or as little as He desires, but in no case will we ever take ownership.
– Larry Burkett
He owns the cattle on a thousand hills,
The wealth in every mine.
He owns the rivers and the rocks and rills,
The sun and stars that shine.
Wonderful riches, more than tongue can tell,
He is my Father so they’re mine as well.
He owns the cattle on a thousand hills,
I know that he will care for me.
– Jake Hooker
Record Keeping
Know well the condition of your flocks, and pay attention to your herds; for riches are not forever, nor does a crown endure to all generations.
– Proverbs 27:23-24
“If we Christians can accept that role as stewards and manage God’s resources according to His direction, God will continue to entrust us with even more.”
– Larry Burkett
“Clearing clutter – be it physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual – brings about ease and a sense of peace.”
– Laurie Buchanan
Why would God entrust you with more money if you can’t manage what has already been given to you?
Wants vs. Needs
I am convinced that my God will fully satisfy every need you have, for I have seen abundant riches of glory revealed to me through the Anointed One, Jesus Christ.
– Philippians 4:19
“The secret to sustaining yourself from day-today while also reaching financial goals is building a budget that balances your needs and your wants.”
– Erin Huffstelter
Those who want for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles.
– Isaiah 40:31
Why It’s So Difficult
There is a pleasure related chemical in our brain called dopamine. It is a “feel good” chemical released as a survival mechanism in the presence of something good. When dopamine is released in our bodies, we feel good! And when something makes us feel good, we usually want to do it over and over again.
Seeing an item we want in the store excites the brain. The more we want the item, the more excited the brain gets. Buying the item satisfies the want and the brain releases dopamine. The more we buy, the more shopping brings us pleasure.
